Moped Insurance – A Necessary Choice

Mopeds and scooters are now a popular transportation choice as the cost of gas is out of sight. The overall cost of keeping a car on the road is also now an expensive proposition to many. Smaller 50cc mopeds and scooters are the motor size demanded most, because they remain quite affordable and have fewer requirements than motorcycles. The average gasoline mileage for mopeds is about 90 miles per gallon, and some newer models go almost 150 miles on a gallon of gas – an incredible savings for local commuters.
Due to their size and performance, mopeds are just shy of being classified as motorcycles in most states, which lowers the regulatory requirements. Registration is not required in many states, or is real cheap, and a motorcycle license is not required, just a regular operator’s license. Liability insurance is being required in many states as more mopeds take to the road – and basic policies are fairly inexpensive at $100 or below.
The reason liability insurance is important for moped owners is that if you cause an accident and it results in damage to the other vehicle, and injuries, you will be personally financially responsible – ouch! Having unlimited liability for medical expenses, property damage, and legal expenses is not a comforting situation.
Since a moped insurance policy will protect your finances and let you sleep at night, it simply doesn’t add up to ignore it, especially since it’s relatively cheap.
Insurance policies for mopeds can easily be found by searching online, and purchased through the largest insurance companies and strong specialty insurance providers. It’s recommended that you choose a strong insurer and buy enough liability insurance (at least) to cover your risks- probably about the same limits as your car insurance.
You can also upgrade your moped coverage to include accident damage (collision coverage), damage due to things like theft, fire and adverse weather (comprehensive coverage), roadside assistance, damage to your gear – if you can afford it and want to reduce your out of pocket risk.
There are also discounts available from insurers for new moped policies such as good driver discounts which earn you lower rates, completing a safety course for cycle owners, installing anti-theft devices, and discounts for multiple vehicles insured by the same company.
Mopeds can save you a lot of money, and many riders love the experience. Just make sure you protect yourself and your assets with adequate moped insurance – you never know when you’ll be happy you made the investment.
